Trunyan Village is a village located in Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Bali. The name of this village is certainly no stranger to some tourists especially to the Balinese, because there is indeed a unique tradition here, with the procedure for residents to do a funeral, in which the dead person's body is only placed under the taru Menyan (tree) without the need to be buried, and strangely the corpse did not emit odors, this is its uniqueness so that the funeral procedures in the Trunyan village which became local wisdom were very attractive to tourists. Access to the Trunyan village cemetery can be taken by boat from the Kedisan pier, Cemara Landung pier, and the Trunyan village pier. What is more recommended is to take a boat from Kedisan village (takes about 15 minutes) compared to a boat ride from Trunyan village, although the jetty from Trunyan village is closer to the cemetery the access road to Trunyan village is quite extreme, the road is narrow and rather uphill, for security and comfort while traveling, crossing from the village pier of Kedisan is recommended. 1. Visit the Truyan Cemetery
Not only the name of a village, but Trunyan is also the name of a cemetery in Trunyan Village. In this Trunyan Grave, the dead body is left lying on the ground, while family members can simply provide a fence of bamboo and offerings next to the body.
2. See the corpse which is placed on the ground and does not smell bad
The corpse in Truyan Village is simply placed on the ground. But the corpses did not emit a foul odor at all even though the corpse turned into a skeleton. This is because the corpse was placed between the Taru Menyan trees. Local people believe that the scent coming out of the taru menyan tree can neutralize the surrounding air so that the stench does not exist, although there is no research that can reveal how this tree can absorb the stench of the corpses of humans buried here.
3. Seeing the Taru Menyan Tree which is thousands of years old
Taru means tree and Menyan means fragrant. Taru menyan tree is estimated to be thousands of years old, and the size of the tree has not changed much. Based on the story of the local population, the villagers were suddenly approached by confusion because of the appearance of the pungent smell throughout the village, even so, many people who experienced colds. After searching, it turns out, the pungent odor originates from a large tree, then so that the pungent odor does not disturb the villagers anymore, then it was decided that the place be a burial place. Trees that emit a strong distinctive aroma can only grow in this area, although it has been tried to plant in other areas. The uniqueness of this tree is the forerunner of the name Trunyan village.
4. "Sema Wayah" grave for people who died naturally and were married
Local residents have their own terms and conditions for funerals. Sema wayah is a grave located under the Taru menyan tree. In addition, the number of remains on the ground close to the Trunyan tree should not be more than eleven bodies. bodies that can be buried under the Taru menyan tree are those who have died naturally and have been married. For corpses that have become bones will be collected with others near the root of the tree, so that the place can be used for new bodies.
5. "Sema Batas" Burial Sites for Those Who Died Unreasonably
How to die unnaturally such as an accident, suicide or killed by people. Well, the body is not allowed to be buried near the Trunyan tree, there is another place called Sema Bantas specifically for those who died unnaturally.
6. "Sema Muda" Funeral Sites for Infants or Children
In addition to Sema Bantas, there is also Sema Muda, a burial place for those who are still babies or children as well as residents who are large and mature but not married. These burial places have been distinguished according to the rules in force in the Trunyan Village.
Prohibitions to the Trunyan Village Cemetery
• You are prohibited from taking home any items in the grave area, even forbidden to be moved or cleaned.
• Prohibition to behave disrespectfully, such as spitting because they feel disgusted in the burial area because in that area it is not uncommon for visitors to find corpses just lying with grave provisions and offerings, this is because the place for burial bodies or dead bodies is full (11 places only), so the oldest body will be moved out.
• Never take a human skull that is lined up in a burial area, whether it's just curious or selfie, without permission first
